Sassari also holds the Blue Flag for 2026. This important international award for seaside resorts managed according to specific sustainability criteria was confirmed by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). Three Blue Flags were awarded to the beaches of Platamona Rotonda, Porto Ferro, and Porto Palmas , for a season that, this year, will begin July 1st and end August 31st.
To complete the application process, the Municipality has developed and submitted its Sustainability Action Plan (Action Plan), in line with the process required of municipalities participating in the Blue Flag program. The document specifies the actions to be implemented and monitored over the three-year period 2025-2027, with the aim of strengthening and implementing local environmental, social, and management sustainability policies. Five strategic macro-objectives have been identified: Sustainable mobility; Sustainable cities and communities; Life on land; Life below water; and Climate change. FEE officials will be able to inspect beaches to verify compliance with the required criteria, and for this reason, annual confirmation of recognition is never automatic.
The criteria required for the Blue Flag label include bathing water quality, recognized as "excellent" based on regular sampling and analysis conducted over the last four bathing seasons. Other criteria also include wastewater purification, proper waste management, sustainable mobility, urban quality, and beach services, such as lifeguards, safe water delineation, clean shorelines, and restrooms. Environmental education is also a priority, to be promoted year-round for both residents and tourists. To this end, a "Blue Point" is planned at the Lago Baratz Environmental Education Center (CEAS), which will coordinate educational activities at the 2026 Blue Flag beaches. Finally, the requirements include the publication of data on bathing water quality and the availability of information on tourism and health services.
Sassari's first Blue Flag was awarded to Porto Ferro beach in 2016. Since 2017, the recognition has been extended to Porto Palmas, and Platamona has been added since 2021.
