Searches are underway for a vessel with 9 migrants on board (and not 11 as initially thought), reported as having died in the waters off Capo Sperone, on the island of Sant'Antioco.
The rescue operation was launched following a report from 11 other migrants traveling on another vessel. The Barracellari company located them in the waters of Sulcis, and when questioned by the Carabinieri, they reported losing sight of the other vessel a few miles off the Sardinian coast.
Aircraft arrived on the scene, including a Coast Guard helicopter, which took off from Decimomannu, two Guardia di Finanza vessels, and a Coast Guard patrol boat, which searched the entire area. The search has so far resulted in the recovery and rescue of only one of the missing migrants at sea, while a life jacket has also been found in the water.
