San Gavino, the lawyer Gino Emanuele Melis to high school students: "Cyberbullying is a social cancer, not a joke"

One out of three students is a victim of cyberbullying and to raise awareness among the students of the "Marconi-Lussu" high school in San Gavino Monreale, a meeting was held on the theme "Diamoci del Tu. Meeting/debate on new media, blessed or cursed? Digital reputation, bullying and cyberbullying juridical and social profiles”, strongly desired by the head teacher Vincenza Pisanu, by the councilor for culture Silvia Mamusa and by the mayor Carlo Tomasi.

Gino Emanuele Melis, lawyer of the Court of Cagliari and international Karate sports champion who recently won the gold medal both in the European championship and in the world championship in the Kumite specialty, has dispensed a lot of practical advice: «The bullying - he says - does not exist as a crime but it is the repeated conduct of which it is made up that is punishable by law. At school we do prevention with the students because bullying is a social cancer and both the victims and the bullies must be helped. In court I have also defended boys accused of damages who understood the mistake and remedied the fact or a boy threatened with death by a group of bullies. There are a series of conducts that are punishable as more or less serious crimes. There is stalking punished up to seven years or even extortion. Bullying is any intentional conduct aimed at destroying my peer, the will to harm my neighbor. It must be an action repeated over time. Cyberbullying has the same definition but they are events carried out through digital platforms".

The conference with the students, which was also attended by the victim of bullying Natascia Curreli, 26 years old from Sedilo, managed to provide them with the tools and knowledge on the use of new media and new digital platforms, on bullying legislation and cyberbullying, on the criminal and civil responsibilities of the bully, on the culpa in supervising and educating parents, on the culpa in supervising, educating and organizing the School, on the psychophysical consequences suffered by the victim and on the protections provided by our judicial system.
