The NAS in Sassari seized 80 kilos of "Naswar" tobacco, a product banned in Italy and considered harmful to health.
Officers from the Anti-Adulteration and Health Unit checked two Pakistanis and an Italian in the city center and found packages originating from Belgium that did not bear the State Monopoly mark.
The three were charged with tobacco smuggling and criminal conspiracy for the purpose of smuggling.
"Naswar" is chewed and is particularly popular in Central Asia. Use of this type of tobacco is associated with various health problems, from dental problems to oral, esophageal, and pancreatic cancer, as well as cardiovascular problems.
