The old locomotive is ready to return to Mandas. The project conceived and promoted by the municipal administration to promote the green economy continues unabated by focusing on a new type of environmental tourism that develops in a contemplative form, using vintage and tourist trains and seeking the suggestions of a distant era in time. The era of steam trains.
The symbol of the ambitious project is the old locomotive which – once the restoration work is complete – will be placed in the center of the new Lawrence railway park under construction near the town station. A sort of scenography will also be set up to depict Lawrence's arrival in the country of the former Duchy.
The first locomotive passed through Mandas in February 1888; while the first railcar made its appearance in the following century, more precisely in 1959. The suggestions and charm of a time that was punctuated by the slow pace of steam trains now inspire ideas and projects of a tourist-cultural nature, through the of the park and the inn near the station. "We are building the first railway park on the island with a hotel and restaurant, there will also be a meeting point and a relaxation area in the station grove", explains Mayor Umberto Oppus.
