A bronze lion 2 meters high, placed on a granite base of the same height, was inaugurated this morning by Mayor Fabio Lai together with the commander of the MM Petty Officers School, Simone Battisti, in La Maddalena.

Present were the parliamentarian Dario Giagoni, mayors and administrators of some neighboring municipalities, a military picket, the San Domenico Savio band, associations, island citizens and tourists.

The imposing bronze-granite is located on the seafront of Cala Mangiavolpe, between Piazza Umberto I (Piazza Command) and the sea, placed between the two high bases, also in granite, which support the high flagpoles that are flagged on important occasions and anniversaries and which open access to the “Ammiraglio” quay. In the base of the monument a plaque has been placed referring to the Royal Decree of King Umberto I of 18 June 1893 or 130 years ago, with which it was decided that the civic coat of arms of the Municipality of La Maddalena was «the Lion looking and vigilant in majesty ».

The ceremony was attended by Dario Caruso, creator of the work, the same author of the large statue of Maradona in the Naples stadium, of the winged angel placed last month in the depths of the Sciumara bay, in the sea of Palau, where it was sunk in 1943 the cruiser Trieste, and the bust of Domenico Millelire, inaugurated two years ago also in La Maddalena.
