A “double meteorological attack” is underway in Italy. The rapid descent of a polar nucleus towards the Alps and the simultaneous intense cyclonic activity between Sicily and Sardinia have been confirmed.

In the next 12-24 hours, according to the experts at Ilmeteo.it, snowfalls up to 800-1,000 meters are expected in the Western Alps and other violent storms between Sicily (where the alert is red) and Sardinia (yellow). Two cyclones are recorded in Italy at the same time: one in the North and one in the South.

In detail, snowfall is expected especially in southern Piedmont with accumulations of up to 20-30 cm above 1000 meters. A dusting of the white lady will affect all the Western Alps up to the Aosta Valley, with some flakes also on the Lepontine Alps.

But be careful, especially for the cyclonic bad weather that will hit Sicily again with potentially flooding phenomena: showers and strong thunderstorms are also expected in Lower Calabria and eastern Sardinia. As for this stationary situation between the major islands, it should be remembered that the Mediterranean Sea still has a temperature up to 3.5 °C higher than the average for the period: therefore, an exceptional amount of heat remains available as fuel for these exceptional cloudbursts.

And this fuel will not only be available in the area between Sicily and Sardinia: even in the Valencia area, after the historic and dramatic floods of two weeks ago, some weather models even indicate the possibility of new violent rainfall . At the moment, over 300 mm (300 liters per square meter) are expected on the Valencian coast between Wednesday and Thursday. A situation to be monitored carefully, like that in Sicily and Sardinia.

An improvement is expected from Thursday with a general drop in minimum temperatures by Friday, but with prevalence of sunshine.

A yellow alert has been issued for today on the Island for storm and hydrogeological risk: the areas affected range from Sarrabus to Gallura, passing through Ogliastra and Baronia.
