The woods and Mediterranean maquis of Sardinia come back to life after the devastation of the fires .

The areas of Scano di Montiferro , one of the symbolic places of the great fires of 2021, and the Pineta del Sinnai are the first two areas selected by Ichnusa, Legambiente and AzzeroCO2 to kick off the "Our Commitment " initiative.

3,000 plants have already been planted in Scano di Montiferro , while the planting of another 1,000 plants in Sinnai will soon begin, with the aim of restoring nature injured by the fires and preserving the biodiversity of the Sardinian territory.

And the plantings are only the first phase of a project which aims, in 3 years , to redevelop 6 areas of the island affected by fires and hydrogeological instability with the planting and maintenance of 10,000 new shrubs .

THE PROJECT – “Our Commitment” stems from an important premise: in Sardinia woods and forests cover about 40% of the total area of the island. A good 900,000 hectares of land, half of which is made up of Mediterranean maquis, which make Sardinia one of the "greenest" regions in Italy. Yet, due to the combined effect of fires and secular anthropic pressure, the soil has gradually become impoverished , "weakening" the woods. According to estimates by the Forestry Corps, in fact, in the last 30 years about 2,500 fires have been recorded per season in Sardinia , affecting 2-3 thousand hectares of forest. An incidence that puts this priceless heritage at risk .

«It is exciting to see the nature of Sardinia reborn, planting a tree is the beginning of a journey in progress, a real investment in the future - said Matteo Borocci , director of the Ichnusa Brewery. When we witnessed the devastation of the fires we immediately felt the need to do something concrete to restore value and beauty and dignity to our territory , the landscape and the environment and we can't wait to complete this project with Legambiente and AzzeroCO2. A special thanks goes to the local administrations and the territory who will take care , together with us, of the long-term maintenance of the redeveloped areas . Hoping that other realities will want to join us in this initiative".

«A concrete gesture and a message of hope for the environment, the landscape, biodiversity, for the communities of today and of the future - the words of Annalisa Colombu , President of Legambiente Sardegna - We are very happy to contribute to increasing the beauty of Sardinia with this important project of Mosaico Verde and proud of the alliance around the common good close by the various subjects involved».
