Twenty-four years of imprisonment. This is the request for sentencing against Giovanni Murtas, a 59-year-old carpenter from Serramanna, accused of killing his 51-year-old wife Marisa Pireddu with 57 stab wounds on 5 May 2020 in the couple's home. After the femicide the man had tried to take his own life with the same knife.
This morning, before the Court of Assizes of Cagliari presided over by judge Giovanni Massidda, the public prosecutor Nicola Giua Marassi concluded his discussion with a request for a sentence of 24 years in prison, recognizing however the generic extenuating circumstances because the accused - defended by the lawyer Herika Dessì - asked for forgiveness and compensated one of the civil parties, the 31-year-old son of the couple, formed with the lawyer Marco Lisu, who today began his harangue.
However, the discussions of the other civil parties have already concluded: the brothers of the victim, represented by the lawyer Stefano Piras, replaced in the courtroom by his colleague Carla Paulis.
The crime took place around 6.30 pm in a house at number 42 in via Turati, in Serramanna. After a violent quarrel, Giovanni Murtas - at the time unemployed like his wife - grabbed a craft knife, a stiletto he made, and threw himself at his wife, hitting her repeatedly in different parts of the body. On the corpse there are also the signs of a desperate attempt to save himself, protecting himself with his hands.
The accused then tried to kill himself with a blow to the chest using the same blade, but was rescued by the carabinieri and taken to the Brotzu hospital in Cagliari.
The sentence is expected on March 3.
