A thousand interventions. A thousand people who have been given a new chance thanks to the work of professionals who work every day to restore health, independence, and a future to patients suffering from serious aortic valve disease .
The Interventional Cardiology and Haemodynamics unit at Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari has reached an important milestone: the thousandth TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implant) procedure, a minimally invasive procedure that allows a diseased heart valve to be replaced without resorting to traditional open-heart surgery .
"This milestone isn't just a number," comments Bruno Loi, physician and director of the facility: "Behind every intervention is a person who has regained breathing without difficulty, walking, and returning to their daily lives. There are families who have found peace. These are the stories that give meaning to our work."
The activity began in 2010, when this technology was still in its infancy. Today, the Cagliari center is one of only two in Sardinia capable of performing this procedure; the other is in Sassari.
This achievement, the company states, has been built over the years thanks to technological investments, clinical experience, and above all, an organizational model based on teamwork. Interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, clinical cardiologists, cardiac anesthesiologists, radiologists, nurses, and technicians collaborate at every stage of the process to identify the best solution for each patient.
"No one achieves a thousand interventions alone." Francesco Sanna , medical director of the Interventional Cardiology and Hemodynamics unit, emphasizes: "This achievement belongs to an entire team that has worked with skill, dedication, and a collaborative spirit over the years."
To celebrate the achievement, tomorrow, Friday, June 5th, the conference "1000 Tavi at Brotzu: a thousand interventions, a thousand stories to tell" will be held in Cagliari, at the Fondazione di Sardegna on Via S. Salvatore da Horta.
"In an aging Sardinia where the number of people affected by severe aortic stenosis is growing, this conference will also look to the future, addressing organizational issues and development prospects for the regional network," commented General Director Maurizio Marcias .
