Sardinia wants to bet on the future and innovation. Hence the decision to push on multiple fronts for the candidacy of the area around the disused mine of Sos Enattos in Lula (Nuoro) to host the Einstein Telescope , the future European infrastructure for the research of gravitational waves . The Sardinian institutions, who would like to bring the important infrastructure to the island, have signed an inter-force agreement for the coordination and promotion in Sardinia of initiatives to support the Nuoro site, which already enjoys the support of the Government. The National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) also participate in the agreement.
"We were very keen on signing this agreement - says Alessandra Todde, president of the Sardinia Region , the lead body - which follows the resolutions and funding already put in place in recent weeks. Einstein Telescope is a strategic infrastructure for us, for which we have been working since day one . The agreement signed today sees us at the forefront of promoting the candidacy and the entire territory, building coordinated and participatory moments in all areas of the Region. We want to team up with universities and research institutions, involving the citizens of Sardinia", concludes Todde.
A fundamental role in the Sardinian candidacy for Einstein Telescope is played by the local universities, as Francesco Mola, Rector of the University of Cagliari, underlines: «Our university is proud to be an integral part of this initiative, which not only confirms the strategic value of our territory, but also highlights the scientific and academic excellence that we are able to offer. This agreement demonstrates the strength of the synergy between national institutes, universities, public bodies, industrial entities and the local community».
Among the actions mentioned in the agreement there are also initiatives of a strategic nature for the territory , such as the strengthening of air and road transport, the study of solutions for sustainable mobility compatible with ET, the creation of international schools and other initiatives that favor the reception of foreign researchers. The coordination of the activities will be entrusted to a management committee composed of six members (one for each entity involved) and chaired by the Region.
