Antonio Maria Pani, a 64-year-old from Ozieri, was sentenced to 9 months and a fine of 3,500 euros. He was accused of damaging the tombstone of the carabiniere Walter Frau, killed on 16 August 1995 in Chilivani, a victim of the Pedesemene massacre in which he lost his life with the other soldier Ciriaco Carru.

The man, in addition to breaking part of the commemorative plaque, had written on the back of it "Carabinieri you have broken" and had also defaced some walls in the town of Ozieri with insulting graffiti against the military.

Judge Anna Pintore ordered Pani, accused of contempt, damage and defacement, and defended by lawyer Antonella Chirigoni, to also pay the civil party costs, and a provisional sum of 1500 euros. Assisting Frau's family, who joined the civil action, was lawyer Sebastiano Chironi, who wanted to point out that the sentence falls just two months after the thirtieth anniversary of the sacrifice of the two soldiers.
