"A situation bordering on the incomprehensible." This is how the Fials union defines the closure of the Brotzu general surgery, communicated in recent days by the Piazzale Ricchi healthcare company.

The divestment, writes the provincial secretary of the union, Paolo Cugliara, "appears to have begun a few days ago, with the usual communications to the staff, having been advised of an upcoming relocation of other departments of San Michele".

The current general surgery will be transformed into a complex mini structure with only 10 beds for hepatobiliopancreatic surgery and liver and pancreas transplants, «while all other elective surgical activities will be transferred to emergency surgery, which will have to guarantee all these services together with emergency activity, 24 hours a day throughout the year".

We ask ourselves, Cugliara writes, «how the latter can guarantee the ordinary election activity with relative reduction of waiting lists, when at the same time it must necessarily ensure emergency services. This transformation", according to the trade unionist, "will entail the real risk of a dramatic reduction in scheduled interventions, since as there are no longer two specific structures but one alone, this will not be able to efficiently meet the population's requests for surgical services, already sensationally late given the waiting times for some interventions".

Fials appeals to the regional health councilor, Armando Bartolazzi, to stop «with the utmost urgency this dramatic massacre and take the necessary measures so that the population of Sardinia does not suffer yet another dramatic reduction in healthcare services. Sardinians need care and not further cuts to healthcare."
