The residents of Via Giardini, in Cagliari, are furious. For years, during the closing hours of the ZTL gate (from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. and from 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.), motorists and motorcyclists enter in reverse and in the wrong direction.
Residents say they are ready to start a petition to ask for the installation of cameras at the exit of the gate.
"We've been asking for five years," reiterates Sandra Cortis, a resident. "We've launched many appeals, all of which have fallen on deaf ears. Now we're trying again for the umpteenth time, hoping it's the right one."
Cortis says that more and more people are reversing or going the wrong way "both in cars and on mopeds. Most of them are on scooters. And as if that wasn't enough, they're also going at high speed."
Three days ago, Massimiliano Ena looked out from the balcony of his house attracted by the screams coming from the intersection of via Giardini and vico XIV San Giovanni. "It was around 10:30 p.m.," he says, "and I saw the argument between the driver of a scooter, who had entered the wrong way, and a driver who was instead coming from the right direction. They almost put their hands on each other. We almost had a head-on collision."
Daniela Stara , who also lives in Via Giardini, says that this is not the first time that an accident of this type has been risked: «Luckily, most of the time, those who enter in the wrong direction or in reverse do not find another vehicle coming from the opposite direction, but other times it happens and only chance has so far ensured that a head-on collision has not occurred. But why wait for serious damage before installing cameras at the exit of the gate? If something bad happens, we will stand in front of the Town Hall».
