The only thing stopping drivers on Via Chiabrera and its extension, Via Torricelli, is a traffic light. It's the only obstacle for those unscrupulously pushing their foot down on the accelerator. Otherwise, this straight road connecting Cagliari to Pirri is used "as if it were a Formula One racetrack." Local residents have been complaining about this for years, calling for it to be made safer with raised pedestrian crossings, like those further along on Via Vesalio, another street that used to be heavily used.
"The stripes aren't enough," residents say. "Only speed bumps force drivers to slow down." The only safe crossing is at the traffic lights, in the stretch between Via Chiabrera and Via Torricelli, near Via Biasi.
Local residents are concerned not only for their own safety, but also for the children from nearby schools, who often walk along this straight road and cross it. "The municipality must act before it's too late," they say.
