An experimental roundabout is being built in Cagliari's Piazza d'Armi to try to ease traffic at one of the city's busiest intersections: the one between Via Is Mirrionis, Via Marengo, Viale Merello, Viale Buoncammino, and Viale San Vincenzo. Starting next week, the traffic lights will be removed and the road will be resurfaced.

"This is a project that has been long-awaited," explains Mayor Massimo Zedda. "Thanks to the studies conducted and the type of work planned, there will be a reduction in geotechnical and structural risk, thanks to better load distribution and greater waterproofing and surface drainage of the pavement."

The roundabout, underlines the mayor, «will allow for an improvement in traffic flows coming from the central arterial road and from the city centre, from the historic districts and the surrounding neighbourhoods».

The project, according to the Municipality's plans, "is also an investment in safety and will make use of structural monitoring of the cavity beneath Piazza d'Armi and new surveys supported by technology."
