An inmate has died in Bancali. The Sappe union of Sardinia reports: «Investigations are being carried out on the causes of death, but the death of an inmate is always a defeat for the State».
Rumors speak of a presumed overdose but nothing is confirmed yet. The victim is a 47-year-old from Sassari, the body was seized by the magistrate.
Donato Capece, general secretary of Sappe, remarks: «We are here again to discuss problems and solutions on the prison system, on the sidelines of the sad event that happened in Bancali. The fact is that the problems are getting bigger and the solutions – always the same, few, simple and clear – are not being listened to».
According to Capece, there were interlocutors but solutions were missing.
«The reality - he continues - is that among the main reforms that have destabilized the system and destructured security in prisons there is also the elimination of prison health care, which allowed for a "so-called internal" management through agreements stipulated between the administration and doctors, who guaranteed a constant presence and knowledge of the prison population that was fundamental for a correct and more adequate management».
The leader of Sappe recalls that «the current national prison population is composed of 30% of prisoners awaiting trial; 30% of non-EU prisoners and 20% of drug addicts. Figures that in Bancali further increase in percentage terms: Last May 31, compared to the 450 beds, the prison housed 539 prisoners, 190 of whom were foreigners and 19 women».
