A prison officer was bitten last night in Bancali prison by an inmate. The inmate asked to be taken to the infirmary around 10 pm and, once there, he went berserk attacking the three police officers present, who managed to prevent the man, around 35 years old and of non-EU nationality, from attacking the medical staff. But in trying to stop him, the man bit deeply into the arm of an officer who was later treated in hospital but without being able to benefit from blood tests.
The news was reported by the penitentiary police union Uspp and its regional secretary for Sardinia Alessandro Cara: «The penitentiary police - says Cara - although accustomed to managing these critical situations, finds itself at a point where it is now disarmed».
The Sardinian representative of the Union of Penitentiary Police Unions stigmatizes how attacks are the order of the day: «This is no longer a job for policemen but a multidisciplinary one in which we find ourselves dealing with psychiatric inmates who should not be in prison».
Finally, criticism of the leaders who manage the penitentiary situation: "They do not carry out initiatives to combat this phenomenon. Furthermore, the measures decided by the superintendent Antonio Galati to improve the context have only worsened it".
