On Thursday, September 12, almost 177 thousand Sardinian students will return to class after the summer holidays . In some schools, the start time has already been brought forward, but for the vast majority of students on the Island, the bell will ring tomorrow morning at 8:15.

In the classroom there are also 20,479 ordinary teachers , of which 18,927 on class and 1,552 of enhancement. Instead there are approximately 3,000 tenured support teachers plus the derogation support positions.

A school, the Sardinian one, that in the last ten years has lost 17% of its students : compared to 2014-2015 there are 35,208 fewer students. Over five thousand have disappeared from one year to the next 5515 children and young people. A record figure (even beating the decrease of 5357 units of 2022-23) inevitable consequence of a record low birth rate. The trend is that: since 2020 the school has lost an average of 4616 students every year. Increasingly empty classes that - the only consolation - allow at least to avoid overcrowding, overcrowded classes and the search for classrooms.

To inaugurate the school year, next Monday, September 16, a guest of honor will also arrive in Sardinia: the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. Accompanying the Head of State - on his eleventh visit to the Island - will be the Minister of Education Valditara .

A ceremony is planned for the occasion and will be held in Cagliari at the Convitto Nazionale "Vittorio Emanuele II" , in via Pintus.

There will be eight schools, one for each province of the island, representing Sardinia at the event: the Marconi high school in Sassari, the Deffenu high schools in Olbia, Volta in Nuoro, Leonardo da Vinci in Lanusei and the comprehensive schools 1-2 in Oristano, Villamar, Lilliu in Cagliari and Pascoli-Deledda-Don Milani in Carbonia.
