The Municipality of Alghero is aiming to revitalize the Sant'Agostino district with an urban regeneration project .
Yesterday, the meeting with Mayor Raimondo Cacciotto, Councilors Corbia and Marinaro, municipal technicians, and the masterplan designers was held, with the aim of launching a complex and comprehensive transformation of the neighborhood.
During the meeting in the conference room of the Santissimo Nome di Gesù parish, residents spoke with the administration to share the details of the project that will transform the historic core of public housing.
"The revitalization of our neighborhoods is a goal we intend to achieve with commitment, as stated in our mandate," said Mayor Raimondo Cacciotto. "Our urban planning policies are geared toward regenerating existing assets. Sant'Agostino deserves particular attention, and we want to give the neighborhood new impetus, starting with citizen participation in decisions about its future, improving public spaces with green spaces, street furniture, and parking, and fostering social interaction and inclusion."
The historical and urban characteristics immediately necessitated a comprehensive approach to the entire area. This included the development of a Master Plan that identified general guidelines for urban voids, greenery, services, roadways, circulation, paths, play areas, and connections to neighboring areas, including the area in front of the church of Sant'Agostino Nuovo. The aim was to create more usable and functional spaces for the neighborhood.
Given its complexity, the project is divided into four functional lots. The first involves the "Urban redevelopment and regeneration works of Largo Nunzio Costantino" ; the second involves "Intervention on the widening of the square in front of the church of Sant'Agostino – Via Carrabuffas" ; the third lot involves "Intervention on the urban park of Largo Guillot" ; the fourth lot involves "Reorganization of roads, parking areas, pedestrian areas, and tree planting in Largo Era, Largo Ballero, and Largo Costantino."
