Another 78 pigs killed in Talana to combat the African swine fever epidemic. All animals not registered in the zootechnical registry and without owners and health checks.

The operation was ordered by the Project Unit after a previous action which had led to the identification of four adult pigs positive for the virus.

Right after the identification of the 4 HIV-positive people, the EU Commission and the Ministry of Health asked the Region and Project Units to open an outbreak with restriction zones of 3 and 10 kilometers.

The slaughter of pigs is due to the fact that illegal breeding is one of the major risk factors for the persistence of the virus in the territories. They are, as pointed out by the European inspectors, the transmission belt of the virus between the wild population and domestic animals.

The activities of recent years, Brussels acknowledged, have drastically reduced the number of these animals and the circulation of the virus.
