Four hundred thousand Sardinians will be called to the polls today until 11 pm and tomorrow from 7 am to 3 pm to elect 148 mayors and the same number of municipal assemblies. Nearly a third of Sardinia's 377 municipalities will vote, especially since those from 2020, the year of Covid, will be added to those voting in 2021.
The most anticipated contest will be in Quartu, but the spotlight will also be on Sestu, Sanluri, Tempio, and Porto Torres. In towns with more than 15,000 inhabitants, a runoff election will take place on June 21st and 22nd if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote.
The territorial distribution of the municipalities voting confirms the weight of the internal areas : 37 municipalities in the Oristano area, 27 in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, 27 in that of Sassari, 20 in the Nuoro area, 13 in Gallura, 11 in the Medio Campidano area, 7 in Ogliastra and 6 in Sulcis Iglesiente.
One of the most critical issues of this round concerns the small municipalities where only one list was submitted, out of 62 in total. Here, the mayoral candidate is challenging abstentionism: the election is valid if at least 40% of registered voters participate and the list receives at least 50% of the valid votes. Failure to reach these thresholds will result in a special administration.
