Farewell to Jeff Beck, legendary rock guitarist, struck down at the age of 78 by a lethal form of bacterial meningitis. The announcement was made on the Twitter page of the artist who became famous in 1965 with the Yardbirds (where he had replaced Eric Clapton) and then in the group that bears his name with Rod Stewart.

Beck had redefined guitar music in the 1960s and influenced movements such as heavy metal, jazz rock and punk.

In his career he has won six Grammys for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and another for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

The death occurred in hospital, near his home in Surrey.
