On Saturday 10 May, starting at 8:30, in the Giorgio Pisano conference room in Piazza L'Unione Sarda, the round table “Resuming life after cancer” is scheduled, part of the IX edition of the event “A kick to cancer”, organized by the Mai più sole contro il cancro Association, which will address a series of issues related in particular to breast cancer but largely connected more generally with lifestyles that allow for proper prevention.
During the meeting, organized under the scientific direction of Professor Alessandra Graziottin, specialist in Gynecology-Obstetrics and Oncology, Sex Therapist, Consultant Professor at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the University of Verona, Director of the Center for Gynecology and Medical Sexology at the H. San Raffaele Resnati in Milan, and the scientific collaboration of Dr. Nadia Brusasca, Psycho-oncologist at the ASL of Nuoro, and at the Health Department for the Oncology Network of Sardinia, those strategies will also be explained, the result of numerous international scientific studies, which suggest the correct behaviors to improve the quality of life after cancer .
"A tumor of one centimeter, in the first stage, contains a billion cells," explains Graziottin. "But, to reach those dimensions, it took about ten years. This is enough to understand the importance of prevention. The difference is made by lifestyle: a complex of behaviors that include physical activity, a correct diet but not only. It is necessary to take responsibility for taking care of oneself from every point of view, including emotional and social life . We will therefore talk about breast cancer in the most complete vision possible that ranges from symptoms to diagnosis, from genetics to therapies, from the importance of prevention to psychophysical rehabilitation, with particular attention to how to protect and enhance the joy of a happy sexual intimacy, if desired."
Professor Graziottin, who in 2008 established a non-profit foundation that bears her name, for the treatment of pain in women , deals with issues related to women's physical and mental health, with an intense dissemination activity, through many channels, including a website, with the aim of improving the quality of life of women, also contributing to achieving gender equality, since female disorders often make many work activities more tiring and complex.
The Round Table will include Luisa Brodu, a psycho-oncologist at the ASL of Nuoro, Massimo Dessena, a surgeon, a breast specialist at the Policlinico Duilio Casula in Monserrato, Regional Coordinator of ANISC (National Association of Breast Surgeons), Daniele Farci, an oncologist and Director of Oncology and Medicine at the Nuova Casa di Cura Decimomannu, Erica Giuressi, a geneticist, Rita Nonnis, a breast surgeon, Director of the SSD Breast Surgery at the POS San Francesco in Nuoro, Maria Cristina Santona, an oncologist, head of the CAS in Nuoro, Marco Scorcu, a sports doctor, Arianna Tommasetti, a physiotherapist at the ASL of Nuoro, and Loredana Pau of Europa Donna Italia. Moderator Michele Boero, Director of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the ARNAS G. Brotzu in Cagliari and President of the Sports Commission of the Municipality of Cagliari.
During the meeting, the formal delivery of the donation is planned, by Dr. Albachiara Bergamini, representative of the Taccia ETS-Rimini Foundation, of the BD - Becton Dickinson wireless device for vacuum-assisted breast biopsies to the senology department of the "Duilio Casula" University Hospital in Monserrato to Dr. Massimo Dessena. "Resuming life after cancer" was organized with the patronage of the Alessandra Graziottin Foundation, the Taccia ETS Foundation, SIPO Italian Society of Psycho-Oncology Region of Sardinia, FIDAPA section of Cagliari, Europa Donna Italia, Autonomous Region of Sardinia, Municipality of Cagliari.
The event is linked to the IX edition of “A kick to cancer”, a women's five-a-side football tournament that will take place on Sunday 18 May starting at 5 pm, in Cagliari, at the Giuseppe Belly Sports Centre in viale Cimitero 29 , in which teams made up of patients, doctors and supporters will participate. The aim of the tournament is to highlight the importance of teamwork between healthcare workers, doctors, friends and family members close to the patients, to win together against the physical and psychological suffering related to female tumors.
According to Europa Donna Italia, in Sardinia in 2023 1379 people underwent breast surgery, an estimate that does not take into account patients who decided to have the surgery outside the island . In Italy (source Aiom) in 2024 53686 new diagnoses of breast cancer were estimated. Statistics say that the net survival rate 5 years after diagnosis is 88% and the probability of living another 4 years, conditional on having passed the first year after diagnosis, reaches 91%. For this reason, it is essential to understand which strategies to adopt after diagnosis.
