«Dear Union,
My name is Silvio Porceddu, I'm 46 years old, I'm from Thiesi but I live and work in Olbia.
I wanted to share my story to let everyone know that true heroes wear doctor's coats. Specifically, Dr. Michele Atzori of the hand surgery department at Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari.
I've been a carpenter for 30 years, working in the nautical industry. In May 2025, I had a serious accident at work, resulting in a subamputation of my left hand. When I arrived at the emergency room in Olbia, given the seriousness of the situation, Dr. Tondini decided to send me to Brotzu Hospital, and I was immediately airlifted there. After initial tests, they decided to perform surgery, and after nine hours of surgery, Dr. Michele Atzori, Dr. Riccardo Budroni, and Dr. Annalaura Domenicano managed to reattach everything and save my hand.
During all these months, I was never left alone. My hand was still giving me problems, and Dr. Atzori, who followed me every step of the way, decided to perform another operation to improve its functionality.
So, eight months later, another operation, this one also very complicated, but once again they performed a miracle. Now my hand is safe. It will take practice, but my hand is safe, for the second time, thanks to those heroes who wear the doctor's coat: Michele Atzori, Riccardo Budroni, Annalaura Domenicano, and the entire hand surgery department.
A big thank you now and forever."
Silvio Porceddu
