In view of the visit next Monday to Cagliari of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, expected in the capital for the inauguration of the school year, the RSU of the workers of Portovesme srl of the factories in Sulcis and Medio Campidano (San Gavino) is mobilizing.
The activity materializes in a letter addressed to the head of state, in which the difficulties regarding the situation of the workers are highlighted - defined as "dramatic" - and with the request for urgent intervention . "The company is a producer of zinc in Italy and, until a few months ago, of lead and some precious derivatives such as gold and silver, at the San Gavino Monreale plant", the report appeared in the content of the letter. "On September 5, the multinational Glencore, our parent company, communicates the decision to stop zinc production at the Portovesme site, with the exception of a small department that treats steelworks fumes. The interruption of production with the consequent abandonment of the site, drastically denotes the disengagement by the company, towards an area that has hosted the multinational for over 25 years with all that a 'heavy industry' implies in terms of environmental sacrifice ".
The difficulties. In the letter sent to Mattarella, the RSU recalls the long dispute and the escalation of the protest that occurred a year ago, when four workers climbed onto the factory chimney and remained 100 meters away for four days. " We take the liberty of involving you in this dispute on behalf of the 1,200 workers and 1,200 families who are experiencing this tragedy, because we believe in institutions, for what they represent and can do, not only in terms of verbal solidarity, but through concrete support and targeted intervention ."
The letter from the workers' representatives ends with a request for a meeting: " If there were the possibility, we would have the pleasure and honor of meeting you to explore the issues and possible solutions, or if this were not possible, we hope that the voice of 1,200 families will not go unheard ", the message in view of Mattarella's visit to Cagliari. "Many of the issues that we find ourselves discussing daily in our territory, such as the low birth rate, depopulation, school dropouts, petty crime, we believe all have a solution of continuity, a common matrix in work. For these reasons we trust in the concrete hope of your authoritative commitment".
