The swarm of wasps suddenly enveloped her: she didn't have time to look for any kind of shelter. Despite numerous stings , at least a hundred , only in the evening was the 83-year-old pensioner , Laura Bianchi, from Sant'Anna Arresi , declared out of danger, after being attacked by a swarm of wasps yesterday morning. Since she is not allergic, the stings only caused widespread swelling but did not cause the anaphylactic shock that had been initially feared.

The episode occurred in the seaside resort of Porto Pino where the woman and her family own a house. The family was spending the last days of their vacation in the seaside village, when in the late morning they experienced dramatic moments. According to what was possible to reconstruct, the woman was in the garden when she inadvertently touched and then removed a wasp nest. It may have been that she bumped it without realizing it with a shoulder, a foot or some other part of her body. A few moments later the pensioner experienced moments of terror : the wasps, feeling in danger, surrounded her and attacked her. The woman had no way of finding shelter or heading to a safer spot. In the end, about one hundred stings were counted on her body. The woman suffered shock, but not anaphylactic, but rather due to the quantity of microlesions she suffered . His requests for help were collected by his relatives and the call to 118 was made. The immediate intervention of the Avos volunteers of Sant'Anna Arresi was providential, on enhanced 118 service until September 30th considering that there are still significant presences in the tourist complex of Porto Pino.

Given the critical conditions of the pensioner, help was also requested in Cagliari: in fact, the helicopter rescue took off from the capital and landed after about 15 minutes of flight in the internal square between the canal and the parking lots of the first beach. The pensioner, very sore but still quite lucid, was stabilized and taken by aircraft to the municipal stadium of Carbonia where, waiting for her, another ambulance was there to deliver her to the care of the Sirai Emergency Room . In the meantime, in Porto Pino, the firefighters from the Carbonia barracks also intervened: the operators took steps to identify and isolate the wasp nest. In the meantime, a long period of observation of the patient began at Sirai. Despite the initial apprehension, the pensioner's health conditions improved as the hours passed and the widespread swelling caused by about a hundred stings gradually reduced. It was therefore confirmed that she did not have anaphylactic shock. Her blood pressure values have always remained optimal and the pensioner has responded very well to cortisone and antihistamine therapy.

Her resignation was also expected late in the evening. She was prescribed a period of rest. The mayor of Sant'Anna Arresi Paolo Dessì immediately followed the matter with extreme attention, always maintaining close contact with the woman's family: «There were moments of apprehension, fortunately everything was resolved for the best».
