The Argonauts Association opens its doors to Carleton E. Watkins. The famous American photographer who lived between the 19th and 20th centuries, "specialized" in landscape photography, is at the center of the appointment with Marco Loi.
On Friday in Olbia, at the Polytechnic Argonauti in via Garibaldi, starting at 6.30 pm, the Sardinian photographer, lover and expert of ancient techniques, will hold a meeting entitled "Brief history of wet collodion and the adventures of Carleton E. Watkins". The lesson will be divided into two parts: the first dedicated to the history of photographic technique, and focused on the salient aspects of the wet collodion technique, which allowed 19th century photography to be radically innovated, and on the importance of the invention of the negative and in how the reproducibility of photography affected the future of the medium, and the second on Carleton E. Watkins.
Through the projection of his images, the work of the American pioneer of photography will be analysed. «It is thanks to Watkins' work that we have the first photographic rendering of the American "wild west", underlines Loi. Among Watkins' most famous works stand out the expedition following the railway company to witness its advance westward and the landscape work in the Sierra Nevada area, which was very important for the recognition of Yosemite Park by the American Congress.
