The designation of origin celebrates its first seventy years and Pecorino Romano celebrates, in Bergamo, the birthday of the certification of origin with a gift to its admirers and consumers: it is the cheese with the least environmental footprint, that is the one that is produced with total respect for the environment and which, in 2020, produced a value of 500 million euros, which is the second voice of the Sardinian economy.

"Within the production area, identified in the Lazio region, Sardinia and in the province of Grosseto, in the last 70 years we have witnessed the development of a sector which in the most specific case of Sardinia today represents the second economy in terms of gross domestic product - says the president of the Consortium for the protection of Pecorino Romano PDO, Gianni Maoddi - The production value of Pecorino Romano, in 2020, was equal to over 210 million euros, which when transferred to trade generates an estimated value of almost 500 million euros. Numbers that immediately make us understand the importance of our sector, also strengthened by the introduction of DOP ".

On the sustainability front, the Pecorino Romano PDO supply chain represents by far the cheese with the least environmental footprint: the almost exclusively extensive breeding with grazing flocks, often natural, guarantees, by virtue of the requirements of the production disciplinary, beyond the 70% of the food ration coming from the same area of origin.

"Also on the part of the production plants - observes Maoddi - there have been enormous steps forward on the environmental front: increasingly sensitive to production practices with low environmental impact, they continue to invest in energy production from renewable sources available in abundance in our territories.
