New layoffs in the contractors working in the Portovesme srl plant , owned by the Glencore group.

The unions' protests have flared up again, and the coordination of metalworkers' contracts has been called "urgently" for Monday at 8am.

Yesterday the territorial secretariats of Fiom, Fsm, Ullm Sardegna Sud-Occidentale Sulcis Iglesiente and the RSU of the metalworkers met with the representatives of the contracting firms, who communicated the decisions taken regarding the new dismissal procedures.

The current contractors at the Portovesme srl construction site currently include 111 units (almost halved compared to the 200 of a year and a half ago) and "are forced to constantly employ only 20% of the workforce" , explain the unions. For this reason, massive recourse is made to the redundancy fund, which is "not sustainable" for the workers involved.

At FM Grigliati, for example, redundancy payments have been opened for 30 workers per day out of a total of 41. The same situation applies to S kv, Gsmi, Socher, Isc, SEGesa, CQ Nol, all companies that, due to the massive loss of orders, are forced to make increasingly massive use of redundancy payments. And the workers of Nuova Icom, Elastomeccanica, Mi.Da. Charter, Jap, Anticorrosione Sardegna, have disappeared from the presence in the plant , while the majority of Gsmi employees are forced to accept transfers even outside the island to avoid dismissal .

For the contractors, in short, the very serious crisis that is being faced at the Glencore shipyard makes the situation unmanageable and forces drastic and painful decisions. "The social peace announced several times by the company management clashes with the reality of the facts, in which the workforce of the contractors is reduced to the minimum terms" , the unions denounce.

"Who is able to guarantee social peace in a situation like this?", the unions attack. "An endless crisis, which is identified with the lack of industrial policy and which once again sees multinationals in the dock, which relocate by abandoning the territory . On the same dock - the unions insist - are the political institutions, incapable of providing the tools needed to counter increasingly strong competition , in which energy costs always have an absolute relevance".

The territorial secretariats ask for compliance with the declarations made by ministers Urso and Calderone, together with the president of the Region and the councilors for industry and labor on 27 December 2024, the date on which they declared "the productions that Glencore was preparing to stop were strategic, despite the opposition of unions and institutions" .
