The five minutes of injury time were about to begin, when Baunese coach Mario Masia called the last substitution in the 89th minute in Lanusei – Baunese, first leg of the first round of the Coppa Italia (final score 4-2 for the home team, played yesterday at Lixius), to bring on Mattia Nieddu, born in 2008.
A moment that the other Nieddu on the field at that time, Marco, born in 1981, will hardly forget. Because father and son together on the field for an official match is one of those sportingly exciting situations that rarely materialize in the world of football.
"It was really exciting to share a moment of the game with Mattia," says Marco Nieddu, a pure striker with 465 goals currently under his belt, scored in over twenty years of career, "also because I always thought that, at most, one day, I could find myself coaching my son. Honestly, I had never thought about the possibility of having him as a teammate."
The opportunity materialized this year at Baunese, with Marco Nieddu in his third championship in the black and blue shirt (68 goals scored in the first two seasons), following the transfer of the young Mattia (who grew up in the Tortolì youth team) to the Baunese youth team, after three seasons played in the Academy.
