The European Commission has proposed to draw € 5.4 million from the Globalization Adjustment Fund (EGF) to support 801 workers made redundant in Sardinia.

Among the recipients, 611 former Air Italy employees and 190 former Porto Canale employees of Cagliari, "who have lost their jobs due to restructuring and globalization", reads a note from the Commission.

The € 5.4 million proposed will be used to find a new place in the labor market through education or training or to start their own business.

"The job market in Sardinia is limited due to its insularity and its remote position with respect to the mainland - said Nicolas Schmit, Commissioner for Employment - assistance from the EGF will help the Sardinian authorities to finance measures such as orientation professional and personalized assistance in looking for a job ".

However, the Commission's proposals must be approved by the European Parliament and the Council.
