According to an initial reconstruction, the car —driven by a thirty-year-old— was traveling along the provincial road and struck from behind the two young women who were walking on the side of the road along with a third 20-year-old woman, who survived the accident.

The group had just parked near the local gym and were on their way to the town festival , where a concert was taking place. The two 21-year-olds died instantly.

Carabinieri officers from Merate (Lecco) and the Red Cross from Olgiate (Lecco) were on site. The Brivio festival is one of the most popular and well-attended in the entire province during this period.

The entire area where the accident occurred was closed to traffic to allow for rescue operations, surveys, and an accurate reconstruction of the incident.
