It's not just students who are protesting the high cost of living. Truck drivers are also protesting fuel prices in Southern Italy, particularly in Sicily, Puglia, Calabria, and Campania .
In Campania, several trucks blocked the Bausan gate at the port of Naples , causing traffic disruption on the A1 motorway, particularly in the access area to the capital. The protest was peaceful, and the truck drivers explained the reasons for their protest to motorists.
Around twenty trucks and several agricultural vehicles were also stopped on the roadside in Calabria, in the Cosenza area, with intermittent traffic blocks between the towns of Settimo di Rende and Montalto Uffugo "to raise the alarm," truck drivers say, "about the high cost of living and the unsustainability of business management costs."
In Sicily, in Messina, trucks are stopped on the highway, leaving two toll booths free for entry and exit. At the San Gregorio toll booth, the highway barrier that allows access from the Etna capital to the A18 Catania-Messina highway, trucks have also blocked the entry and exit lanes.
And then Puglia , where the protests by truck drivers affected some localities, such as Altamura and Bari, and headed towards the headquarters of the Presidency of the Region to request a meeting with Governor De Caro.
The transporters denounced six aspects of the crisis: first and foremost, the high cost of diesel, "which creates unsustainable costs for businesses, which are at risk of closure under the weight of inflation." Other issues raised by the protest included the lack of immediate funding, the government's failure to intervene, delays in tax credits, the lack of "engaging and decisive representation," and the lack of attention to the sector.
