As the grip of the extreme heat becomes ever tighter, the number of Italians ready to leave for their summer holidays is increasing. There are 29 million ready to leave between June and September, for one or more trips, with a total per capita budget available of 1,190 euros (+10% compared to 2023) according to the Confcommercio Tourism Observatory in collaboration with Swg.
The traveler confidence index stands at 72 on a scale from 0 to 100: 2 points more than June 2023 and 1 more than June 2019 (pre-Covid year).
The expected average per capita expenditure is 750 euros in July, 910 euros in August - the month with the highest incidence of long holidays - and 760 euros in September. Positive trend, therefore, with a probable 2024 finally breaking records, also for domestic demand. Numbers that mark the end of a long period in which the relationship between compatriots and holidays had been decidedly lukewarm and far from the excellent performance of foreign flows directed to Italy.
The estimate of the Florence Tourist Study Center for Assoturismo Confesercenti is also optimistic, according to which it will be the summer of foreigners in Italy : the official accommodation facilities in the quarter await the arrival of approximately 26.3 million foreign tourists , for a total of 105 million of overnight stays, 2.6 million more than in the same period of 2023. A growth five times higher than that of Italian presences , for which an increase of approximately 590 thousand units is expected (+0.5%).
Overall, this summer, one in two tourists in Italy will be foreign.
The peak month for foreigners will be July , during which over 39.5 million nights spent by tourists from abroad are expected, i.e. 37.5% of the entire period, while for the month of August approximately 36.3 million overnight stays (34.5%). The relevance of the main traditional markets, in particular the European ones, is also confirmed for the summer of 2024. The most significant increases are expected for German, French, Swiss, Dutch, Polish, Austrian and Belgian flows. Among non-European markets, reports of increases were recorded essentially for the US and Brazilian markets.
According to the Coldiretti/Ixè survey, there are 38 million Italians who will spend at least one day of holiday in Italy or abroad in the summer, half a million more than in 2023, for an average expenditure of 746 euros per person, with an 12% increase compared to last year.
The favorite destination for travelers who will remain in Italy (Federalberghi data/with Tecnè) will by far be the seaside of the peninsula or Sardinia and Sicily (57.3%), followed by the mountains (10.8%), the localities of art (10.7%), from the sea in the smaller islands (10.3%) and from the lakes (3%).
For those who will go abroad, the large European capitals win (53%), followed by cruise travel (25.3%) and seaside resorts (14%).
