Torture, violence and mistreatment of patients at a physical education center in Rome. Ten people arrested by the Carabinieri of the investigative unit, they are all social and health workers from the Motor Education Center (CEM), managed by the Italian Red Cross.
Now under house arrest, they are accused of inflicting repeated violence against two patients suffering from serious psycho-physical pathologies. The investigations were triggered by the complaint of the same leaders of the Capitoline Red Cross in April 2023 after having noticed that a patient of the facility had a noticeable bruising on the face compatible with beatings.
Of the ten arrested, five are accused of torture and the others of mistreatment of people entrusted to them for reasons of care, supervision and custody. For one, the crime of sexual violence was also hypothesized. The investigations by the Carabinieri of via In Selci, specialized in dealing with crimes against vulnerable victims, were conducted from April to November 2023 through technical activities, acquisition of documents and testimonies.
«The methods of conduct, of what the public prosecutor has adequately defined with a gallery of horrors , provides the measure of the character of each of the suspects - reports the investigating judge's order - who have not only exercised constant and unprecedented violence on people completely incapable of reacting, but accompanied their unspeakable actions with words of derision , which stigmatised, through derision, the very mental deficits from which the offended people appear to be suffering".
