Emanuele Impellizzeri, the 38-year-old man arrested on 5 September on charges of killing Chiara Ugolini , 27, in the apartment that the girl shared with her partner in Calmasino di Bardolino, committed suicide in prison in Verona .

The news was released by the national secretary of the Uilpa Penitentiary Police, Gennarino De Fazio, according to whom the discovery of the suicide dates back to 5.30 today. Just today Impellizzeri should have presented himself before the magistrate to be questioned about the crime. The suicide was also confirmed by the man's lawyer, Mattia Guidato.

Impellizzeri, originally from Catania, was Ugolini's neighbor.

After the discovery of the crime he had tried to escape, but was stopped along the Autostrada del Sole, near Florence, on his motorbike.

During the first interviews with the investigators, he always made use of the right not to answer. After being taken to the Tuscan prison of Sollicciano he was transferred to the Venetian one of Montorio, where he decided to take his own life by hanging himself in his cell.

The autopsy examination on Ugolini's body had found various internal traumas, to the nape, chest, abdomen, a sign of a violent struggle with the attacker. As for the motive for the murder, one of the hypotheses being examined by the investigators was that of sexual assault.
