A 60-year-old inmate strangled his cellmate, 40, in the prison of Caltagirone, in the province of Catania.
The man confessed and was therefore arrested by the prison police. The Caltagirone prosecutor asked the investigating judge to validate the provision and to issue a precautionary order.
From an initial reconstruction, the murder, caused by "violent mechanical asphyxiation from strangulation", "occurred at least 48 hours before the body was found".
The investigations are coordinated by the prosecutor Giuseppe Verzera and by the deputy Natalia Carrozzo.
