A 48-year-old priest from Brescia was arrested this morning by the Carabinieri of Verolanuova.
This is Don Ciro Panigara , who at the beginning of the year resigned as parish priest of San Paolo, at the request of the diocese, after a boy said he had been the victim of his "attentions".
"Critical situations and elements have emerged that suggest immediately interrupting the experience in the parish community," wrote the bishop of Brescia, Pierantonio Tremolada, in a letter that was read in church. "The confusion that this decision causes in all of you faithful is understandable," he added. " The parish priest has resigned in order to continue his personal journey with greater freedom ."
According to the Brescia Public Prosecutor's Office that coordinates the investigation, the parish priest would have been responsible for "numerous aggravated sexual violence against some minors" . Not only the one that led to his resignation, therefore, but also other cases related to 2011 and 2013 when he was a curate in Adro, in Franciacorta, also in the Brescia area.
The priest is now under house arrest .
