He admitted he was on that balcony and picked up little Samuele in his arms, but denied having deliberately thrown him off the third floor.

This is the version provided to the investigators by Mariano Cannio, the 38-year-old man arrested today on charges of being responsible for the death of the three-year-old boy who fell from the building in Via Foria in Naples.

The 38-year-old, very well known in the neighborhood as he is a domestic worker for several families in the area and described as a man with a very closed character, also told investigators that he suffered from mental disorders and provided his version of the facts that aims to exclude the fraud by focusing on the accident instead. But he could not explain exactly how the child fell from the balcony.

And it is precisely on the subtle difference between willful misconduct and accident that the hearing on the validation of the arrest scheduled for Monday morning will be played.

THE FACTS - Yesterday the tragedy occurred, little Samuele (his mother was pregnant at the eighth month) made a 15-meter flight falling from the third floor of the building where he lived with his parents.

The emergency transfer to the nearby “Vecchio Pellegrini” hospital was of little use, where the doctors were only able to ascertain the death of the child.

It was initially thought of an accident, then the turning point in the investigation: in that house little Samuele was not alone with his mother, there was also Mariano Cannio, and with him the woman who had left the room for a moment had left son.

In the neighborhood everyone trusted the 38-year-old servant, many even left him the house keys. The man was stopped this morning.

The shock and dismay of yesterday this morning, having learned the developments in the investigation, have turned into anger in the populous Neapolitan neighborhood. Many neighbors have deposited flowers on the site of the tragedy: "It is not possible to kill a child like this", shouted a woman.
