A face-to-face meeting at the Quirinale with the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio, then a very harsh note to clarify one thing: pardon is the exclusive power of the Head of State .
Sergio Mattarella thus stops the government from rushing ahead in the Roggero case , the jeweler sentenced to 19 years and 4 months for killing two robbers who fled after the robbery in his shop.
"This afternoon, President Sergio Mattarella received Justice Minister Carlo Nordio at the Quirinale Palace to clarify the limits of the minister's powers regarding the granting of pardons, a power that the Constitution reserves exclusively to the President of the Republic, as confirmed by the Constitutional Court in ruling 200 of 2006," a statement from the Quirinale reads.
A few clear words, arriving immediately after the Minister of Justice opened an investigation into the Roggero case following appeals from the centre-right majority, which would like to grant him a pardon .
Yesterday, the Court of Cassation, rejecting the jeweler's appeal, finalized his 14-year and 9-month prison sentence for the events that occurred on April 28, 2021, in Grinzane Cavour, when Roggero killed two robbers and wounded a third. After the robbery, during which they threatened the man, his wife, and his daughter with a knife and a gun (later revealed to be a toy), the three fled and got into a car. Roggero caught up with them and fired four gunshots. One was killed instantly, another was hit in the leg, and the third attempted to flee, but the jeweler caught up with him, kicking him in the head and back until he died.
