Procida revokes Benito Mussolini's honorary citizenship with a decision taken unanimously by the city council.

Mussolini had become an honorary citizen of the island of Arturo in 1924, two years after the march on Rome and the seizure of power in Italy by the National Fascist Party. At that time, many Italian municipalities decided to award Mussolini the honor, and he is still an honorary citizen of hundreds of towns and cities.

However, yesterday the Procida city council decided to revoke the honorary citizenship, with a unanimous vote of all the councillors, and to assign it, again unanimously, to Daniel Buren, a French painter and sculptor who loved the island to whom he also dedicated a book photographic.

«The conferral of 1924 took place in a climate of general exaltation of ideology, without any specific special connection with Procida. Today the revocation reminds us that we must always dissociate ourselves from all phenomena that deprive us of freedom ", declared Dino Ambrosino, mayor of Procida.
