The free condoms offered to the athletes at the Milan-Cortina Olympics sold out in just a few days. So much so that the 10,000 condoms made available to the athletes at the Olympic Village ran out in just three days. "Ten thousand were used by 2,800 athletes," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said at yesterday's press briefing.
Adams responded by commenting on press reports that supplies were already running out halfway through the Olympics. And if anyone decided to keep some as a souvenir, a quick online search will find them for sale, still sealed.
“ I know that many people use them or give them to friends outside the Olympics ,” said Mialitiana Clerc, a 24-year-old Malagasy alpine skier who spoke at the press conference because she is the recipient of an IOC scholarship.
The young woman said that even in Beijing the free condoms were much appreciated : "There were many boxes at the entrance of every building we stayed in," she explained, "and every day they were empty."
