The free condoms offered to the athletes at Milan-Cortina sold out in just a few days. So much so that the 10,000 provided to the athletes at the Olympic Village ran out in just three days. "Ten thousand were used by 2,800 athletes," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said at yesterday's press briefing.

Adams responded by commenting on press reports that supplies were already running out halfway through the Olympics. And if anyone has decided to keep some as a keepsake, a quick online search will find them for sale, still sealed, on some of the most popular secondhand sites.

“I know that many people use them or give them to friends outside of the Olympics,” said Mialitiana Clerc, a 24-year-old Malagasy alpine skier who attended the press conference as a recipient of an IOC scholarship.

The young woman said that even in Beijing, free condoms were much appreciated: "There were many boxes at the entrance of every building we stayed in," she explained, "and every day they were empty."
