The Council of Ministers has approved a state of emergency throughout the national territory "following the exceptional increase in the flows of migrant people through the Mediterranean routes": supported by an initial loan of five million euros, it will last six months.
«We gladly complied with the request of Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, well aware», said his colleague in charge of marine policies, Nello Musumeci, «of the seriousness of a phenomenon which is registering a 300 percent increase. Let me be clear, the problem will not be solved, the solution of which is linked only to a conscious and responsible intervention by the European Union".
With the state of emergency , faster procedures and actions can be implemented to offer migrants reception solutions in a short time with adequate standards. Government sources support this at the end of the CDM, underlining that the Civil Protection and the Italian Red Cross will also be involved with their wealth of experience and equipment.
At the same time, the same sources underline, it will be possible to increase and strengthen the structures aimed at the repatriation of those who do not have the right to remain in Italy (CPR) , enhancing identification and expulsion activities.
