The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella telephoned Roberto Salis this morning after yesterday the father of Ilaria, the 39-year-old Italian teacher detained for over a year in Budapest, had sent a letter to the Quirinale .

Roberto Salis himself makes this known: « He reiterated his personal closeness to me and the family and guaranteed me his personal interest in the case . I thank him for the diligence with which he responded to me in less than 24 hours and above all for his sensitivity and closeness to the drama I am experiencing with my family."

"I was hoping they were different days," Mattarella also said , adding that he understood his state of mind well and assuring him that he will do everything within his possibilities, which are not extensive on an operational level and pass through the government . Salis was very grateful for the call and the speed of response and explained that, with his letter, he wanted to point out the disparity in treatment between two Italian citizens.

«The difference between our system, inspired by European values, and their system has determined this situation which has led to unequal treatment between two Italian citizens, a disparity that affects our public opinion", added the president.

Mattarella refers, as underlined by Salis in the letter to the Head of State, to the different treatment reserved for Gabriele Marchesi, a young man accused in Hungary for the same crimes as Ilaria . The Milan Court of Appeal rejected Hungary's request for his surrender, underlining the risk of detention that does not respect the person's inviolable rights .

It is the first time that Roberto Salis has spoken to the Head of State, after the first certified email sent on 17 January he was contacted by telephone by an official of the Quirinale: «We are all very happy and Ilaria will be too when I hear from her - explained Salis - it was a very friendly phone call lasting about five minutes which made me very happy and in the end we wished each other Easter greetings."

Two days ago the Court of Budapest denied house arrest in Hungary to Ilaria Salis , at which point Roberto decided to turn to the President of the Republic.
