A huge brush fire broke out this afternoon in Rome at the Torre Spaccata meadow and four rescuers, a firefighter and three civil protection workers were taken to hospital with red code for the burns they suffered .

The brush fire broke out in the Cinecittà Est/Torre Spaccata area. The four rescuers are in serious condition at the Sant'Eugenio hospital in Rome.

" One colleague in particular, from the fire brigade, taken to Sant'Eugenio is in more difficulty , but the doctors tell us that there are no imminent dangers, however we are waiting for evaluations from them too", explains Massimo La Pietra, director of the civil protection of Lazio.

"The entire Capitoline Administration - reads a note from the Campidoglio - gathers around the injured volunteers and firefighter and thanks all the men and women who every day work hard to guarantee the safety of citizens, putting their own lives at risk."

The fire is practically over, "everything that could burn has burned," said the regional director of civil protection. "Now the teams are doing the clean-up operations."
