One month after the Marmolada disaster , which caused 11 victims on 3 July last, all the entrances leading to the summit of the Queen of the Dolomites remain closed , while at high altitude the search for the remains proceed in fits and starts due to the danger of the glacier.
A ground intervention organized for the morning of today by the joint forces team was postponed due to the unavailability of the helicopter of the permanent fire brigade of Trento, engaged in another service.
The latest land searches carried out on 29 July had made it possible to recover various organic finds and parts of technical equipment belonging to the victims of the collapse of the glacier.
THE DANGERS - In recent days, a new ordinance by the mayor of Canazei, Giovanni Bernard, has expanded the area off-limits to the public , including the entire north side, up to the shore of the Fedaia basin. The measure was taken after a French consortium , getting lost during a night trip along a viable road, was recovered by the Alpine Rescue in an area forbidden to hikers. The mountaineers, without adequate equipment, were safely returned to the valley, but the episode led to tightening of the controls to avoid new accidents, while the presence of numerous foreign mountaineers led the Municipality of Canazei to place new signs access prohibition translated into the main European languages.
The danger of the glacier, due to the scarce snowfall of last winter and the high temperatures recorded since spring, has also been highlighted several times by experts, in the light of the analysis of the instruments brought to high altitudes. The widening of the crevasse on the orographic right of the massif, about 200 meters long and between 25 and 35 meters wide, is also worrying, which in mid-July led to the suspension of all research activities for a couple of weeks and the evacuation. of the Capanna glacier refuge. The same head of the National Alpine Rescue, Maurizio Dellantonio, explained that, in addition to the glacier , the underlying layer of permafrost, essential for guaranteeing the stability of the soil and rocks, is also rapidly melting .
Immediately after the tragedy, the Trento prosecutor's office opened a file hypothesising the crime of a culpable disaster against unknown persons. The prosecutor Antonella Nazzaro is in charge of the investigations with the public prosecutor of Trento, Sandro Raimondi. The reports drawn up by a hydraulic engineer and those of a glaciologist were included in the investigation file.
THE COMMEMORATION - Tomorrow, 5 August, the Provincial Council of Trento will meet in Canazei, where a moment of commemoration of the victims and a meeting with the head of the National Civil Protection, Fabrizio Curcio, a representative of the Veneto Region and the leaders of the police forces and local and national organized volunteering. At the end, a short ceremony is also planned at the Fedaia Pass, at the foot of the glacier, with the blessing of the places of the disaster.
