" It's not true that Giacomo died because he fell to the ground after a punch, he died from the beatings . I kept asking for help, telling them they had to stop. But they didn't stop. They beat him to death," even while he was on the ground.

Sara Tognocchi, a 47-year-old from Massa, partner of Giacomo Bongiorni, the man killed Saturday evening in Piazza Palma, Massa (Massa Carrara) , spoke in an interview with Corriere della Sera. They were supposed to get married in July and move into a new home.

"Saturday night we were out with some friends, my brother Gabriele was there with his son," he recounts. "We were going to get a kebab, it was just after 9:30 PM. There was a small group of young people in Piazza Palma: there were six, maybe seven of them. They started throwing bottles at the shop window, and my brother said, 'But don't throw bottles: there are people who could get hurt.' Gabriele spoke to these kids kindly, he told them politely ."

But the thugs, the woman says, "first surrounded my brother and then Giacomo. Other young men arrived too. They started hitting them. They didn't say anything. They just beat them. My brother fell to the ground and they continued beating him. They never stopped. They beat Giacomo, I saw him on the ground and them on top of him. They only stopped when they realized they had killed him . At that point, and only then, did they run away. I ran to him, I was holding his head in my hands but blood was coming from his ears. His son was holding his hand and saying, 'Dad, get up. Please get up.' But he didn't get up; Giacomo remained on the ground. I still can't believe he died before the eyes of those who loved him. Before my eyes and those of his son, who was then taken to the hospital out of shock. And why was that?"

Three young people have been arrested for voluntary homicide : a minor and two Romanian boys aged 19 and 23, Ionut Alexandru Miron and Eduard Alin Carutasu .
