An illegal parking attendant, at the height of an argument, fatally stabbed the employee of one of the most famous pastry shops in Catania , hitting him with stab wounds to the arms, trunk and abdomen. The victim, Santo Salvatore Giambattista Re, was 30 years old and died after being transferred to the Cannizzaro hospital.

The attack occurred on the Ognina seafront, in the street in front of the pastry shop. The parking attendant, a 37-year-old Zimbabwean, attempted to flee, but was stopped by the police and arrested in flagrante delicto for aggravated homicide . The fight is not linked to the illegal activity of the arrested man, but to reasons that are yet to be clarified.

The 37-year-old does not have a residence permit and in the past has been subjected to measures issued by the Police Commissioner , Giuseppe Bellessai, including the Dacur, the Prohibition of access to urban areas. He also has a known past in the news for which he has been in prison: in July 2019, while he was working as an illegal parking attendant on the Ognina seafront, in Piazza Mancini Battaglia, he attacked two police officers who were about to fine him, hitting them with punches and kicks, before being stopped by the carabinieri and arrested for voluntary injury and resisting and insulting a public official. One of the two officers, hit in the face, was taken to the emergency room for treatment. He was in prison for this crime.
