Fire in a room of a nursing home in Genzano, near Rome: a 76-year-old man died from the serious burns he suffered.
The fire, according to initial investigations by firefighters and the Carabinieri, broke out around 5:30 p.m. in the residential health care facility of the San Giovanni di Dio institute in via Fatebenefratelli. The man set himself on fire, accidentally, with a lighter . According to investigators, he was handling a lighter - it is not clear whether to light a cigarette - when the pajamas he was wearing caught fire. The flames also spread to the pillow of the bed on which he was lying. Rescue efforts were in vain.
The other two patients who were in the room with him were unharmed.
The 76-year-old had been hospitalized in the facility for some time due to both physical and mental problems. An autopsy will be performed on the body. The carabinieri are continuing their investigations to shed full light on the incident.
